The Vine Basket by Josanne La Valley is a very intriguing and artistic novel about a fourteen year old girl named Mehrigul who lives in a very hard time, and if working on a farm by herself isn't enough she may be sent away to work in a factory. But then there is hope when an American lady buys the only basket Mehrigul has made. The lady says that she will be back for more in three weeks. If Mehrigul can make more baskets she may be able to get enough money to help her family, but it won't be that easy.

This book is a great read for everyone young or old. It has a fantastic message that tells you, don’t give up even during hard times and have hope. This novel is beautifully woven with unexpected twists and turns. My favorite parts are when the American lady buys the vine basket in the beginning because it gives hope to Mehrigul and when Mehrigul was making the bamboo basket near the water.

about Xavier

Hi my name is Xavier, my mom and I started this site when I was ten (I’m thirteen now). I began working on this site because I love to read so much and I always give my friends ideas for books they should read. Click here to see a list of my favorites books. Most of my days are spent at school, on the bus, or doing homework. When I find a little down time I like to draw, listen to music, sing, play ukulele or bass guitar.
