wasn't as good as the first book

It has been two years since Janie had last seen Benjamin and she has no clue where he is. So she tried to start her life anew with going back to school in the U.S. But Benjamin on the other hand is stuck with his father in Vietnam curing wounded soldiers from the war and experimenting with a new powder to be able to communicate with Janie. The formula allows the person who takes it to see through the other person's eyes. And when upon taking this powder, Benjamin realizes Janie is in grave danger, he calls their friend Pip to help. With so many things happening at once, all three friends go on a mad race around the world to find each other.

Review

The Apprentices is the second book in the Apothecary series. It was pretty good, but I definitely liked the first book much more. Though this novel still traps you inside the adventures of Janie and Benjamin, I didn’t get the same feeling of true magic in her words. But that may just be because the first one was so good it took all of the others’ thunder.:) I noticed that this novel was different from the first because of how the story was structured, in The Apothecary it was written from Janie’s perspective but this one was written in a narrator’s voice.

The Apprentices spine without book jacket

This book is a fantasy, adventure, and historical fiction novel that will catch the eyes of many different types of readers. My favorite character is Jin Lo because she is mentally strong and pushes on even in hard times. The book is about Janie, Benjamin, and Pip who go on a chase around the world to find each other when Janie is in danger. And the story line is great, it is all well thought though and really gets your mind racing and your heart thumping in anticipation. At its heart, the book is truly about friendship, love, and loyalty that keeps the characters moving through rough spots.

Maile Meloy is an amazing author who can bring any story to life with her witty twists and turns through out the plot. She is able to capture the depth and dimension of true things that actually happened and overlay it with an enchanting fantasy tale that will give the reader a very different feel out of the novel. If Maile makes anymore middle grades books I will gladly read them anytime!

about Xavier

Hi my name is Xavier, my mom and I started this site when I was ten (I’m twelve now). I began working on this site because I love to read so much and I always give my friends ideas for books they should read. Click here to see a list of my favorites books. Other than reading I like to draw and play Minecraft. I also like to rollerblade and build stuff. For a sport I do Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a type of martial arts.
